World cup fever....

After awaiting for four long years, the biggest cricketing extravaganza is back again. India, Srilanka and Bangladesh are all set to host the 10th ICC Cricket World Cup. The opening ceremony at the Bangabandhu stadium, Bangladesh received a huge applause all across the world. The excitement can be felt in the air as Bangladesh for the first time is co-hosting such a mega event. The ceremony experienced the perfect blend of sub-continental traditions and modernity. Fireworks lit up the night sky and dancers created dazzling patterns. Lasers beams wrapped the stage with spectacular lighting. Further, Canadian Rock star Bryan Adams enthralled the audience by his astonishing performance. As expected, 'Summer of 69' featured in his list of songs. The music trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy mesmerized the crowd with the theme song "De Ghuma Ke".

14 nations and around 200 players will battle against each other (over a period of 43 days) with a common aim to win the trophy. A total prize money of US$7.48 million is at stake for the teams standing 1st to 8th at the end of the event. Unfortunately, some of the top notch players would be missing the event because of injuries. Mike Hussey, Eoin Morgan, Sohail Tanveer, Nathan Hauritz are some of them. They are such a world class players, no team thinks of missing them. Their absence certainly would mean a depreciation in the quality of the games to be expected.

India is one of the favorites to win the title. This is not something I am saying just because India is my home team. Professionals, cricket experts, media are screaming the same thing. But whatever experts may say, I think South Africa and England share the equal chances of winning the title as India does. Sorry, I forgot to take the name of 4 times world champion 'Australia' along with the two. But, after seeing their horrible performances around the year and after the retirements of Gilly, Hayden and McGrath , I do not expect the same winning performance from their side. Still, they are Australians and they are famous for their hunger of winning.

But, all these are speculations and winner would be the team which will showcase an over all performance on the field. I just hope this tournament proves to be one of the greatest cricketing events of all time. Each and every one of us get to encounter a well mixture of batting, bowling and fielding. I am looking forward to the tournament!!!
